Cookie Party 2008

I was invited to attend a cookie party that is more than a 20 year tradition for some of the ladies involved. I was selected to make 12 dozen iced sugar cookies. The objective of the party is to bring 12 dozen cookies, share a dozen while at the party and then leave with 11 dozen cookies to share with your family and friends. I will admit for my first year the time to prepare, ice and wrap the cookies was a little more time consuming than initially planned on my part. However; I am now more experienced for next year. I was called the over achiever of the group- so I was told but it was a lot of fun. I am now only allowed to use paper plates and ziploc bags for next year.

Jingle Bell Bash 2008

I saw the following artists perform at this year's Jingle Bell Bash:

Joey + Rory

Carter's Chord

Chuck Wicks

Pat Green

November 2008

I made a quick trip down to Branson to enjoy the Christmas Lights and some shopping of course. We went to the Branson Landing where they have the light and fire show. The trees were decorated in blue and silver with rather large silver reindeer.

September 10 dinner at Cabbage and Condoms with Jamie, Kathy, Ailly, Alison and myself: We ate beef in oyster sauce, seafood hot plate, steamed fish, chicken patte, minced onion and chicken in a purple gel, steamed vegetables, cucumbers in vinegar, chicken wings, sesame pork, and tofu curry.

September 11 dinner at Suan Bua with Tana, Tom, Ailly, Kathy and myself: We ate pineapple chicken, pork rinds and flowers, fried pork, steamed vegetables, mango, prawn spring rolls, fried rice, shrimp, seafood pot, and my placemat was clean after my meal.

Before dinner Kathy and I went to Tana's place for some appetizers and to visit. I took pictures of Rasa Tower (work building) as their place is parallel. The Supalai view's are of work and the busy street we cross everyday to come to work.

September 13 Environmental Work Day and Chatuchak Market and dinner at Toh-Plue Restaurant: The environmental work day consisted of constructing PVC tubes to create an assembly for coral. The office will make 40 PVC assemblies to replant coral the weekend of September 27. This was a dirty job but we had fun as you can tell by the pics. In the afternoon, Ailly, Pikoon and myself went for some shopping at Chatuchak Market- where we avoided the rain. If you take a close look at a couple of the pics you will see when it rains the market gets flooded. Then we ate dinner at Toh-Plue Restaurant; we ate chili crab, steamed vegetables, spring rolls and seafood curry in a coconut.

September 14 Bungsamaran: A group of us left Sunday morning to go fishing at a catfish pond/lake. We rented a large bungalow for the day. It was a rather plush bungalow as well with a couch, 2 air conditioned bedrooms, private toilet, fridge, etc.. We hired a fishing guide who helped with the bait and casting. I was the first one who caught a fish but I believe Dan caught the largest one. We shopped at the bait shop and even managed a game of pool. By the end of the day we were all exhausted and sore the next few days.

Septemebr 16 dinner at MK Restaurant: Ailly and I went to eat to avoid the rain after work. We went to MK which has a hot pot on the table where you cook your food. We ate fish tofu, marinated beef, fish, shrimp, green noodles, cabbage, and baby corn. You cooked everything in a broth and then had some dipping sauce you could mix on the side. I also took some pictures at the BTS to show the heavy rain which is unusual to continue so long.

There are a couple of misc pictures of the guard outside of my hotel who grabs a taxi for me in the morning.

Travels August 25 through September 7, 2008

Monday, August 25 for lunch, we celebrated birthdays for the month of August at a cafe across the street from work:

Pongthep
Worawit
Gail (Anakorn)
Patra
Ailly
Emily
Kathy

Pongthep's birthday was actually on the 25th. Patra's was on July 31st (close), Gail's was on the 3rd and Kathy's was on the 16th.

Friday, August 29 for dinner, Ailly, Kathy and I went to the Huntsman Pub for dinner and to see the Phillipino Band play. The next morning Kathy and I went to meet Tom and Tana to have an English Breakfast and then go to the Jim Thompson outlet. The English Breakfast consisted of scrambled eggs, potato, stewed tomato, ham, sausage, toast, beans and tea. Then we road to the end of the BTS line On Nut and caught a taxi for about 20 blocks to the Jim Thompson Outlet. Jim Thompson is an American who came to Thailand and helped revitalize the thai silk industry.

After shopping there Kathy and I went to meet with Ailly to shop at MBK (huge mall). We were looking for a few specific items but were not very successful in our search. We then went to Ailly's place to get ready for Don Sullivan and Somluck's (Kai) wedding reception. After the wedding reception a group of us went out to a German Pub.

The next morning Kathy and I got up to go to Chatuchak Market for our second time. Kathy will be leaving this week so she wanted to get more souvenirs. We shopped four hours and were hot an exhausted. I actually ran out of money and had to borrow a couple hundred baht from Kathy. We got a cab back to the hotel and I crashed for the night.

Monday, September 1 for dinner, Ailly, Kathy and I ate dinner at a Thai restaurant: thai fried sweet noodles, spring rolls, green curry, and chicken in tamarin sauce.

Tuesday, September 2 for dinner Kathy and I ate across the street from work at Freestyle cafe: spring rolls, lime prawn, chicken w/ mixed veggies, and steamed rice in a heart shape.

Mostly everyday this week it stormed in the afternoon, Friday we got out of work late and it was pouring; luckily Khun Worawit drove Vishal, Kathy and I to the metro so we wouldn't get soaked. When it rains there is no luck getting a cab. I did try to be a heroine but ended up getting sprayed with a puddle when the cars drove by.

Saturday, September 6 Alison, Kathy and I left for Koh Samed Island for the weekend. We hired a driver to take us to the port in Rayong which was about a 2.5 hour drive. We then rented a speedboat to take us to Samed Cabana Villa Resort where we had rented a bungalow on the beach for the night. The resort was located at the Ao Wong Duean beach. The beach was white and the water was clear that you could see to the bottom.

http://www.samedcabana.com/p6_photo.html

We had to wait to check in to the bungalow so we decided to change and hit the beach. When we settled into the bungalow we went and received massages. I got a foot massage and a pedicure, Alison received a Thai massage and clean foot, and Kathy received a clean foot, pedicure and manicure. Quite the life to be on the beach and be pampered. After we were done we ate at restaurant on the beach and had some noodles, pineapple fritters, and spring rolls.

For the evening we traveled via a truck taxi (benches in the back of the truck) to Hat Sai Kaeo beach to the Ploy Thalay resort where they have a restaurant and a fire show twice nightly. We enjoyed ourselves very much and ended up staying for the second show. The fire performers came to the back during their break close to where we were sitting and were showing off. At the end of the night Alison played a game of darts to win Kathy and I little teddies. Then it was off to the taxi to make our way back to our resort. The same driver No 14 was waiting for us to take us back. Kathy and I had a brief late night swim and then went to bed.

The next day Kathy also figured out that there is 14 years between her and Alison and Kathy and I. So we decided 14 would be out lucky No for the weekend. The next day we woke up and enjoyed breakfast, swimming, and relaxing on the beach. We had dinner at our resort and met the staff. Jim who I believe is the owner was very mischevious. We then went and swam and relaxed some more on the beach. When it was time to leave we had already checked out of our room so they let us hose off behind the resort. The speedboat took us back to the Port where we waited for the driver to come and pick us up. We had arrived a little early so Alison and I went to the main road and bought a t-shirt for us all. The port staff was ready to leave so they were happy when the driver came. We then left Rayong and traveled to Bangkok, it was raining on and off on the way back but not too bad.

Travels Continuation from Aug 24

Kathy, Ailly and I met up with:

Parintorn Ratnaratorn (Tree)
Pranee Janjirapiwat (Aw)
Sujitra Suttithum (Ta)
Potjanee Vongkruemake
Chantita Rattanatassanee (Chanti)

Ta also brought her daughter and Potjanee's husband drove us to Damnoen Saduak floating market. We rode along the river shopping, eating noodles, feeding the fish and taking many pictures.

Then we were on our way to the Seafood Restaurant. On the way there were many salt fields and coconut piles. I requested for them to slow down so I could take a picture. They took it a little farther by stopping on the side of the highway and reversing so I could get the picture. This was a little scary watching on coming traffic. Not to mention when we stopped we all got out of the van and took a picture in front of the coconut pile. This was a first for everyone in the van and attracted some looks from the people around. Crazy coconut girl!

The Seafood Restaurant was Thai Style where we all order something and share in the middle. We let them order for us and the food just kept coming. There were shrimps, papaya salad/ som tom (very spicy), crab omelet, fried red snapper, red snapper, soup with prawn, fried rice, steamed rice, crab, crab legs, shellfish and pompelo (fruit) for desert.

After the restaurant we went to see Thai Sty houses with surrounding gardens and another floating market. It was very hot by the end of the day and we were ready to head back for a shower. It was a wonderful experience that we were truly able to enjoy with our Thai friends and translators.

Travels August 15 through August 24, 2008

Kathy's birthday was August 16 so we celebrated friday by eating at a Japanese buffet. On Saturday we went to the Hard Rock Cafe to meet before dinner. Vishal, Mark and Jamie, Ailly, Kathy and myself all went to dinner at Steaks and more where we tried New Zealand type food. I had a New Zealand Ribeye which was very good. This was located at Central World Mall, they had a lot of environmental displays to walk by on the way to dessert. Kathy wanted some icecream so we went to McD's. Mark decided his "large" Mcflurry wasn't so large and also got two icecream cones. After that Mark, Jamie, Kathy and myself went to Soi 8 where they had a live band. The waitress sang Happy Birthday. We stopped and fed an elephant on the way.

On Thursday Aug 21 I went to Huntsman Pub with Tom (office manager) his wife Tana and a couple of their neighbors Dicky and Paul. They had a live band with three girls that sang for entertainment. We are the Champions was a hit along with RESPECT by Aretha Franklin. Tom got a little crazy with the girls. The food was great, I had chicken in a basket and we all shared tastes of the other foods, for desert there was green apple crumbles. I was overstuffed.

The next day we went to Jamie McDermotts for dinner. Her nanny Agnes made us several dishes to try, she is from the Philippines. Alison Mcmenemie (Dave's (C&P) wife), Kathy, Ailly, and myself rode together to the house. We had a great time to visit about past experiences.

Saturday afternoon, Kathy and myself went to Ailly Liu's place to visit and swim. We enjoyed a nice relaxing afternoon by the pool and in the sauna. Ailly also made a chinese desert for us that involved dates and brown sugar stewed with other items. She lives across from the horsetrack so we were able to see some of the races from a distance. After swimming we cleaned up and went to Roadhouse BBQ to meet others from work. Tom and Tana, Shannon Adams and his wife, Don Sullivan and his wife, Ailly, Kathy, Chris Bennett, and myself. I had beef brisket which was very good along with garlic corn and a piece of cornbread. There was also a lady and man singing classic style music. After dinner most of us took the MRT to the Suan-Lum Night Bazaar Market. Kathy and I stayed the longest trying to buy souvenirs. It was very hot and crowded. We left about 11 pm because we needed to get up early to go to the floating market Sunday morning.

Travels August 14, 2008

I am back to work in Thailand after a new adventure in Singapore. Singapore was a nice break from the crowded streets of Bangkok. August 9 was Singapore's National Day celebrating 43 years of independence from Malaysia. There was an air show and fireworks and a 3 tv screens at City Hall were you could view the National Day Parade. They also attempted the world's largest Singapore flag with red and white lights with the crowd.

We stayed at Orchard Parade Hotel which was very nice and in the center of the shopping district. We were in walking distance of the Botanic Gardens which could have been a weeks trip in and of itself. Hundreds of varieties of orchids not to mention all the different types of trees. We also went on a Cheng Ho water tour to see the islands and city skyline. On the tour we stopped at Kusu Island otherwise known as tortoise island. We walked on the beach and collected a few shells.

Sunday for dinner we met with Chris Kim (works for B&V Singapore) and her daughter Molly and G (nanny). They took us to the east coast park area to walk along the water and to see the Seafood Centre where we ate Singapore style seafood. We ordered several things and shared them all including: chili crab, black peppered crab, scallops, cereal prawns and morning glory (vegetable). It was a great meal to share with friends.

On Monday we spent the morning in Chinatown shopping for souvenirs and then went to Sentosa for the remainder of the evening. We went to Underwater World, Palawan Beach, Dolphin Lagoon with the pink dolphins. Then we met some friends of mine who worked on the Spruce project with me; Eddie and Ian with BEC. We met at Coastes which is a restaurant on the beach. Kathy and I had dinner there and then went to Songs of the Sea. We finished the evening by walking through Merlion Walk and then to the cable cars for a ride back to Singapore.

We finished the trip off by spending some time at the Tanglin Mall before heading to the airport. When we arrived in Bangkok Tuesday on the Queen's birthday aka Mother's Day is celebrated as a holiday.

Travels July 31, 2008

All is well~

For lunch yesterday I had chicken with rice noodles (using chopsiticks) it was very good.

Last night Kathy and I ventured to the hotel with direction from Ailly via taxi, sky train and then walking. It takes quiet awhile to get from work to the hotel we are still deciding the best way to go. For convenience in the morning we will be splitting a taxi ride.

For dinner last night we tried pad thai with prawns and chicken rice. The pad thai was very good and the rice was not a winner. Also, on the way home we saw a baby elephant a block from where we stay, they were selling food so you could feed him. He was very cute and it was a bit strange seeing him on the block. Tonight we will be going to the market.

PS: I now have hot water
